Chapter 1
New Mission
“Zombies are not real!” Master Sergeant Dax Young kept telling himself. However if that was the case then what were those things in Afghanistan that killed his team? Zombies were slow moving, one track minded and moved in hordes – these things in Afghanistan were none of those things. These things, that could be called nothings else but Zombies, were fast moving, intelligent, vicious and traveled in small packs. Dax kept repeating his mantra; ‘zombies are not real!’ The mantra was not convincing him that zombies were not real. He had seen too much to not believe they were real. No matter how much his mind did not want to believe they were real he could not convince his mind that they were not real.
Movies about Zombies had it all wrong. These things were more like Velociraptors . From the way they moved, their speed, their intelligence and how they hunted for prey. The memories of Afghanistan and these monsters were so real that he could still smell them. The smell of rotting flesh lingered in the air, but these things had no rotting flesh on them. In fact they looked like every one else on the streets. They looked like your average person, but if you knew what you were looking for they had tells. The aforementioned smell of rotting flesh and they also had icy blue eyes. Those chilling eyes were often the last thing you’d see before they ripped your throat out.
Closing his eyes he could hear the screaming, the sounds of ripping flesh and breaking bones. He tried to will the memories from his mind but they were etched there forever. Dax saw his whole team taken apart and killed one by one by these monsters…these Zombies.

There was that fateful moment when his sniper fell off the roof on the building across from him. She had lost her footing trying to avoid a Zombie that had gotten up there with her. In the fall she lost her rifle and in an instant the three Zombies that were below circled her. They were like ravenous sharks circling their prey. Sergeant McLaine screamed and that seemed to excite the Zombies. Then they stopped circling and watched her for a moment before one lunged at her. It attacked with such ferocity, the likes of which Dax had never seen before. It didn’t toy with her like some animals do, it killed like a predator. The Zombie went right for the throat and made it’s kill. Sergeant Tessa McLaine didn’t stand a chance. They acted faster than Dax could and Sergeant McLaine was dead before he could shoot the first one. He aimed for body mass but all that did was anger the Zombie and it began running towards him. He then moved his aim up and fired again hitting the Zombie in the head and it crumpled to the ground. Master Sergeant Dax Young repeated this action until the other two were dead.
Cautiously Dax moved towards Tessa’s body and knelt down next to her. “I’m sorry Tess.” He whispered. “You should not have been here; but I know you would not have had it any other way.” Grabbing the back of her tact vest he pulled her to a safe place. “I will be back for you Marine! No one left behind.” He took the dog tag off her neck, but left the one on her boot and headed back out to find some place safe so that he could make contact with his command.

The loud trill of the phone ringing on his desk brought him quickly back to reality, “hello?”
“Master Sergeant Young, I would like you to assemble a new team to head to Okinawa, Japan. I have only one request, that you take Gunnery Sergeant Evelyn Stone. She is the best sniper we have. I am well aware of how you feel about having a woman on your team after Afghanistan, but this is not a request.”
He was angry and he wanted to argue the point but he knew it would do no good. Captain Nyx was a good man, he was firm and by the books, but he was fair.
“As far as the rest of your team you can pick who ever you want.” Nyx said into the phone.
“Will do.” Dax replied. “When do we leave?”
“Forty-eight hours.” Captain Nyx said then went on. “Be careful Marine. I will have my Lieutenant there to brief you in 20. He will be going too.”
Rolling his eyes Dax hung up the phone with the Captain. Wondering what he was getting himself into in Japan? Then there was this woman, this Gunnery Sergeant Evelyn Stone, that the Captain wanted on his team. Why did he want her on his team?

Dax was on the phone when there was a knock at his door. He took a long look at the door, knowing who it was on the other side. He did not like Second Lieutenant Gavin Garden. He was an asshole, a glorified pencil pusher, but he was Captain Nyx’s right hand so Dax knew he had to play nice…at least for now.
The knock sounded again and Dax got up from where he had been sitting in the dark at the small 1950’s style kitchen table. Talking into the phone he told the person on the other end of the phone that he would call them back when he was done getting the briefing. Tossing the cell phone onto the table he walked to the door, the man on the other side of it was getting impatient. “I’m coming…” He said at the third knock on the door.
Jerking the door open he looked the Lieutenant up and down. An expression passed over his face that he tried to hide but failed at, it was that look of slight annoyance and disgust at the Lieutenant’s presence. “Come in.” Dax said pulling the door open wider.
Lieutenant Garden walked in, and glanced around the dimly lit room. The expression on his face spoke volumes, he looked annoyed and inconvenienced that he had to be there to brief Dax; however that was not something that he would ever tell Captain Nyx. He would suck up to Nyx and do pretty much anything to get where he wanted to be…
“So let’s get on with this. I have phone calls to make and we are standing here wasting time.” Dax said curtly. Dax was not one to waste time or fuck around when it came to business. There was a time and place to fuck around and this was not one of them, don’t make any mistake Dax liked to get down and have a good time just like the rest of the boys, except for maybe Garden here.
Garden sat down and looked around the tiny kitchen, “must we sit in the dark?” He half growled.
Rolling his eyes Dax walked over to the switch on the wall and flipped it on. The light illuminated the tiny kitchen. Along with the 1950’s style table with metal frame, legs and gray Formica top, the chairs were also metal framed with teal vinyl seats, there was a 1950’s white refrigerator and sink with counter tops that matched the Formica on the table. The walls were a slightly dingy white and the floors were old school industrial tile that probably was full of asbestos.
“So, what are we doing here?” Dax finally asked as he slid into the seat, Garden stood and acted as if he were to sit down he might catch something that he might not recover from.
“We are here because there are reports coming in from Okinawa, Japan that there are creatures that no one can describe, but to say that they act and appear to be Zombies. Garden was on the fence about whether or not he believed that Zombies really existed. Then if they did not exist that would make Master Sargent Young a murderer. Did he kill his whole team? Or did Zombies really exist and that was what took out his whole team, but how was it that he was the only one to survive? Garden didn’t like Young make no mistake but he was there on the command of Captain Nyx and he would deal with him.
“I see.” Dax said, in an almost inaudible tone. Things that he did not want to remember began flooding his mind once again. He shook his head and looked at Garden, “Okay, and…”
“Captain Nyx wants you to assemble your team and head out to Japan.”
“Tell me something I don’t already know Garden.”Dax growled. This man before him was wasting his time and that was something he did not have a lot of right now. “Okay, what you don’t know is this. The Prime Minister of England was in Japan speaking with Japanese dignitaries when there was a disturbance outside and then everything went to hell! It was fast, no one knew what was happening then the next thing they knew it was all over. Only one survivor, a young girl that was a daughter of one of the dignitaries.” Garden paused and Dax narrowed his eyes and watched him for a long moment…
“And?”
“And come to find out it was the same things you were dealing with in Afghanistan.”
“How can you be so sure that it’s the same thing?” Dax did not want to believe that this was happening again. He wanted to believe that the incident in Afghanistan was an isolated incident. He still wanted to believe that zombies did not exist.
Garden pulled from, the file folder that he was holding, some pictures and he tossed them down on the table in front of Dax. Dax’s head dropped and he looked at the pictures, spreading them across the table. Sighing deeply he had his proof that it was indeed the same thing as when he was in Afghanistan. He didn’t understand how this was happening or why it was happening.
“Okay.” Dax said. “I’ll get my team together.
“I am sure that Captain Nyx told you that you will have a Gunnery Sargent with you by the name of Evelyn Stone, and that she is the best sniper that we have?” Dax nodded and continued to look unhappy about that decision that was made for him. “Also I will be going to Japan with you and your team.”
Dax snorted and looked at Garden whom had never seen a day of combat in his life. He didn’t look like he had ever even been in a fight before. Let alone been up against anything like what they were about to face in Japan.
